Signed on May 19, 2026 between Ghana and Canada, the memorandum designates Portage Energy Group Inc. as “Preferential Development Partner” for a project integrated into Tema. Concretely, municipal solid waste will be converted into organic bio-pellets, clean electricity and, ultimately, sustainable aviation fuel for the aviation sector. Each installation is expected to generate up to 25 megawatts of electricity, the excess of which will be injected into the Ghanaian national grid.
Beyond the energy dimension, the project intends to tackle the growing problem of urban waste in Ghana. Craig Latimer, CEO of Portage Energy Group, emphasized that this challenge can be converted into a true renewable energy source. The creation of local jobs is among the expected benefits, strengthening the social anchoring of an initiative entirely financed by the private sector, without burden for the Ghanaian State.
This partnership is part of Ghana's strategy aiming to achieve at least 10% renewable energy in its electricity mix by 2030. By positioning itself very early in the sector sustainable aviation fuel, Accra aims to become a regional hub for sustainable production of this type of fuel on the African continent.
